Following on from the previous post – What is The Open Source –, here are some of the best office production programs as open source and completely freeware on the web to work with text editors, spreadsheets, databases, project presentations, publications, books pagination, magazines, documents and so much more.
LibreOffice – A Powerful Office Package
LIBRE OFFICE is a powerful office package with a simple and modern interface, incorporating several applications such as word processor, spreadsheet, database, advanced calculator, slideshow presenter and publishing producer, making it the best in the open source market.
LibreOffice is developed by users of the open source culture, under the non-profit organization, The Document Foundation, in order to, once again, promote transparency, greater compatibility, security and flexibility for all potential users.
It has a version for several languages, compatible with most file extensions, including Microsoft ones (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) and installs on Windows platforms (all versions), Mac OS and Linux (32 and 64 bit). The official site provides all the documentation, installation instructions and help for all the applications in the package.
Relational Database with Firebird
FIREBIRD is a relational database program that offers many ANSI SQL standard features, running on Linux, Windows, and a variety of Unix platforms. It has been used in production systems, under a variety of other names, since 1981. Anyone with the knowledge can change and develop it and create another version of Firebird (like most opensource programs, by the way).
Firebird has proven excellent performance, from a single-user model to large-scale enterprise development with multiple databases over 500GB, flowing between hundreds of concurrent clients. Full documentation, manuals, books and a reasonable list of useful and positive testimonials are provided.
PostgreSQL Integration
POSTGR is an advanced PostgreSQL-based search engine that provides online data indexing and relevance ranking for data searching. Database integration allows the use of metadata to restrict search results. It runs on virtually all operating systems, Windows, Linux, Unix, Mac OS X and Solaris. Full documentation is available, with translations of the manuals in French and Japanese only.
Spreadsheets with Gnumeric
GNUMERIC Spreadsheet is part of the GNOME desktop environment: a project to create a user-friendly desktop environment. Gnumeric’s goal is to be the best spreadsheet program, being able to read the files saved with other applications of its kind, offering a customizable feel that tries to minimize transition costs.
Compatible with Windows and Linux, Gnumeric has an interface in several languages and provides a complete manual in English, as well as a well-stocked list of features.
Word Processing with AbiWord!
ABIWORD is a word processing program similar to Microsoft ® Word. It is suitable for a wide variety of word processing tasks for office production, allowing you to collaborate with several people on a document at the same time. It is fully integrated with the AbiCollab.net web service, which lets you store documents online, allows easy sharing of documents with friends, and performs on-the-fly format conversions.
Compatible with Windows, Mac OS and Linux, AbiWord has several languages versions and a manual/tutorial in English, French and Polish.

Desktop Publishing with Scribus
SCRIBUS is a powerful desktop publishing program with a truly professional touch, featuring tools such as CMYK color system, color separations, ICC management, and versatile PDF conversion, on Windows, Linux, BSD UNIX, Solaris, OpenIndiana, GNU/Hurd, Mac OS X, OS/2 Warp 4, and eComStation platforms.
Scribus is distributed under the General Public License (with some exceptions), which makes it free and legal for use in any environment, including commercial and governmental organizations. The license also allows anyone to modify the publicly available source code without having to ask for permission.
Professionals and hobbyists alike have produced high-quality publications with Scribus, which is why the list of success stories with this program continues to grow steadily.
PDF files produced with Scribus are RIP-ready. Scribus PDFs have been tested frequently on state-of-the-art equipment and low-cost printers. Scribus was the first software to support several new generations of Adobe PDF specifications well ahead of commercial software.
You can find a lot of documentation, tutorials and articles about any aspect of DTP in several languages on the Scribus Wiki. Just download and try it out! 🙂

my friends from work and I have been dreaming about lately. The niche of detailed information on the web site is truely great and appreciated and is going to help my friends at work in our studies a ton. It looks like everyone acquired a large amount of expertise regarding the things I am interested in and other subjects and info also show it. I’m usually not on the web during the day although when I get a chance i’m usually searching for this sort of factual information and others similarly related to it. If someone gets a chance, check out at my site. Monark Golf
Nice scores :). You should consider adding legal documentation, you know… privacy policy and terms of sales. It would be perfect then.
